On-board computer / Check Control

On-board computer

Outside temperature

Displays the outside temperature after pressing the TEMP (A-TEMP) button. If it falls below +3°C, a gong signal is heard as a warning; the outside temperature is displayed and flashes for eight seconds.
The warning is repeated if the temperature rises to at least +6°C and then drops again to +3°C.

Probable range

This display indicates after pressing the RANGE (REICHW) button how far the car can probably be driven on the fuel remaining in the tank. The value takes into account the way in which the car has so far been driven. A plus sign (+) in front of the displayed value means that it is still undergoing a correction process (measuring tolerance).
If three horizontal display segments flash, the range is below 15km and the car should be refuelled as soon as possible.
The on-board computer registers fuel added to the tank only when the engine has been stopped and the quantity of fuel exceeds four litres.

Average speed

Shows the average speed since the last reset. To display press the SPEED (GESCHW) button.
To reset the calculation press SET/RES. The on-board computer doesn't include the time the car is standing with the engine off in its calculation.

Average fuel consumption

Average fuel consumption can be computed for two distances in parallel. Each time the button CONSUM (VERBR) is pressed, the display alternates between the average consumptions for distances one and two. There is also an indication of whether distance one or two is being displayed.
To reset the calculation press SET/RES.

Distance from destination

After pressing the DIST (DISTANZ) button the display shows how far the car is from the destination, provided the total distance was input before the journey started.
The probable time of arrival, which is recalculated continually as driving conditions change, is also displayed.
If the car has already completed the full distance which was input, the distance value is preceded by a minus sign (-).

Speed limit

If you exceed a speed limit which you have previously input, you will hear a warning gong. The corresponding LED flashes and the display shows the stored limit briefly. The warning is repeated if the speed limit is again exceeded asfter the car's speed has in the meantime dropped by at least 5 kph below the entered value.
To cancel the speed lmit input press the LIMIT button again. The LED goes out but the stored value is not lost and can be re-activated with the Limit button.
To adopt the car's actual speed as the limit value press the LIMIT and then the SET/RES button.

Display units changeover

Press the km/mls button to switch display units between kph and mph or litres per 100km and mpg and back.

Independent heater / ventilation control

Input of switching times

You can preselect two switch-on times for the independent heater or ventilation control. Switching on depends on outside temperature: the heater can be operated below 16°C, the ventliation above 16°C. The heater or ventilation is switched off automatically after 30 minutes.
In order to input the switch-on times, press the TIMER button accordingly. After that enter the time with the numerical input keys and press SET/RES to activate the timer.

Direct switch-on

First press TIMER, then SET/RES. This is only possible in ignition key position 1.

Immobilizing device
Yes, the CODE button has something to do with the immobilizing device. But one shouldn't disclose everything ;-)

Check Control system
System malfunctions are shown in plain text and a gong warning sounded. There is also a general warning light on the instrument panel which comes on during the journey if a fault signal is present.
A system of three priority categories has been adopted for the fault signals:

Priority 1

The faults are shown immediately with a gong signal and flashing indicators in the display. If several faults of equal priority develop at once, they are displayed in succession. These displays remain active until the fault is rectified and cannot be cleared with the CHECK button.
  • HANDBRAKE ON
This signal appears shortly after the car has begun to move.
  • BRAKE ASSIST INACT
Extra effort has to be exerted when steering and braking, since the brake servo pressure is lost and the power assistance for the steering is also out of action.
  • BRAKE LIGHT CIRCUIT
The brake lights are not working. The fuse has blown or the circuit is interrupted.
  • BRAKE LIGHTS FAILURE
The brake lights themselves have failed - bulbs blown.
  • LOW BRAKE FLUID
Brake fluid is close to the minimum mark.
  • ENGINE OIL PRESS LOW
Engine oil pressure has dropped too low. The car has to be stopped immediately and the engine switched off.
  • COOLANT TEMPERATURE
The temperature is too high. The car has to be stopped immediately and the engine switched off.
  • CHECK LEFT BACKREST
The left seat backrest is not locked into position.
  • CHECK RIGHT BACKREST
The right seat backrest is not locked into position.
  • CATALYST OVERHEAT
The car has to be stopped in order to cool down until the display goes out.
  • SPEED LIMIT
Displayed if the car is driven faster than the maximum national speed limit (varies of course from counry to country - not existing in Germany).

Priority 2

These malfunctions are displayed in ignition key position 2 (but priority 1 signals are automatically superimposed). After they have gone out, the indicator symbols remain visible. If the plus sign appears, further signals are present and can be displayed ba pressing the CHECK button.
  • CHECK BACKREST LOCK
The seat back lock sensor is defective.
  • CHECK P.A.S. FLUID
Level in fluid reservior for power assisted steering too low.
  • R/AXLE FAILSAVE PROG
The Active Rear Axle Kinematics (AHK) have cut out as a result of a fault. The car can still be driven. If the steering wheel is slightly off-center when driving in a straight line, the car will veer slightly from its chosen line of travel. This display only exists in the 850CSi as only it has been fitted with AHK.
  • BOOTLID OPEN
Appears only when the car is driven away for the first time.
  • 1 BRAKE LIGHT FAIL
One brake light bulb has blown.
  • LOW BEAM FAILURE
The bulb or the fuse has blown, or the circuit is defective.
  • SIDE LIGHT FAILURE
The bulb or the fuse has blown, or the circuit is defective.
  • TAIL LIGHT FAILURE
The bulb or the fuse has blown, or the circuit is defective.
  • F/FOG LIGHT FAILURE
The bulb or the fuse has blown, or the circuit is defective.
  • R/FOG LIGHT FAILURE
The bulb or the fuse has blown, or the circuit is defective.
  • NUM PLATE LIGHT FAIL
The bulb or the fuse has blown, or the circuit is defective.
  • TRANS FAIL-SAFE PROG
Defective electronic control unit on automatic transmission cars (will never appear in an 850CSi because it has been fitted with a manual gearbox only).
  • BRAKE LININGS
The brake pads are worn down to about 3mm.
  • WASHER FLUID LOW
To be topped up at the next opportunity.

Priority 3

Displayed primarily at the end of a journey in ignition key position 0 (if several signals are present, they are displayed in succession, but priority 1 and 2 signals take precendence over priority 3).
Even with the ignition key removed and the display blank you can recall fault signals with the CHECK button for up to two minutes, provided that the car's doors remain closed.
You can also call up fault signals in ignition key position 2 before a journey is started. The display goes out after a short time or when the car is driven away. No indicator symbols remain visible. The signals are repeated only in ignition key position 0.
If a plus sign is visible further fault signals can be called up by pressing the CHECK button.
  • CHECK ENGINE OIL LEV
Engine oil level has dropped to near the permissible minimum.
  • LIGHTS ON
Displayed at the end of a journey when the driver's door is opened.
